Course Description

This course will focus on an exciting custom home built by Arthur Lo of Insightful Healthy Homes - a leader in high-performance homebuilding - that follows a stringent building standard called the Living Building Challenge (BLC), developed by the International Living Future Institute (https://living-future.org/).

The Living Building Challenge (LBC) is an ever-evolving program designed to create buildings that generate more energy than they use, capture and treat all water on site, and are made using healthy materials. LBC compliance is based on actual, rather than modeled or anticipated, performance; therefore, projects must be operational for at least twelve consecutive months prior to audit to verify Imperative compliance, and all LBC projects must be holistic—addressing aspects of all seven Petals through the Core Imperatives.

Leading the session is Arthur Lo, joined by key members of his project team:

  • Architect: HCMA Architecture + Design, Ian Mclean, Senior Architect
  • Interior Designer: Gaile Guevara Studio, Gaile Guevara, Principal

Although most builders and designers will not be taking on this voluntary elite building standard, as builders across BC move towards NetZero Ready by 2032, the BLC offers incredible insights into the design, material selections, systems, protocols and energy-positive holistic considerations, which could be adapted and incorporated into local residential construction projects.
